Tonight, there is news of another immigration hustle - and, this time, personnel at the Belize City passport office are under suspicion. CEO of the Ministry of Immigration, Tanya Santos confirms, quote, "there is an investigation into an issue."
So, what is that issue? Well, according to our sources, some staffer or staffer tricked the system by creating fake revenue collector receipts for new passports. They put these into the system, pocketed the cash, and the receipts went through for new passports, which were issued, based on the strength of that fake receipt. So, government lost out on that revenue - and tonight, reports are that so far no one knows how many of the fake receipts were processed. They also don't know the extent of the fraud - and if it was confined to fake receipts.
We do know - and the CEO confirmed - that the person responsible - who is a supervisor is on administrative leave pending investigation.
We'll keep following the story.
