32-year-old Nicoli Rhys was gunned down back in July 2023, and today, the man accused of his murder saw those charges against him withdrawn.
31-year-old David Sutherland appeared in front of Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola today, and though he is already serving 2 concurrent three year sentences for firearm and ammunition offenses, he won't get extra time for murder.
Today the ComPol told us that the charges were withdrawn due to insufficient evidence.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I know that there was some discussion with the crown counsel and the DPP office in respect of that matter. According to them, they were not too comfortable with the evidence against him for the murder. And so that was going to be withdrawn."

"And then the charge for keeping an unlicensed firearm and ammunition against him still remains before the court. The police has been tasked to make sure that they do certain work with a view to see if they'll be able to gather more evidence against him or any other person who may be involved."
"And so that's what the CIB officers are going to do now."
