The north was the hotspot for shootings over the weekend - two of which occurred in the villages close to Corozal Town. One person was murdered and another was hospitalized in a bar shooting at 1:00 on Sunday morning. Jomarie Lanza found out more today:
In the blink of an eye on Saturday night, "Mi Compa Mi Compa Bar and Grill" in Ranchito village became the scene of a murder and shooting that claimed the life of 24 year old Jamour Gabourel, and injured his friend 24 year old Eaton Galvez.
The two young men were out with a group celebrating a birthday when they encountered the gunman, who was known to them. No one knows for sure what transpired leading up to the shooting, but Gabourel's father in law, who also happens to be the mayor of Corozal Town told us today that the deceased was not the type to go about looking for any trouble.
Rigo Vellos, Mayor, Corozal
"Jamour was my son in law. He was with my daughter for a couple of years now, part of the family. He was already accepted by me like a son plus he used to work for me at my gym so he was also an employee of mine."
"Jamour was an athlete and a basketball player he was a very calm guy and didn't look for problems any at all not to my knowledge I've been around him for many years, so I don't believe I'm sure he wasn't a guy that goes out there looking for trouble so that's definitely not the case here."
"From my understanding he got one shot. I understand on his side which penetrated on the other side. That's what I heard, it's one shot."
And as for Galvez, who sustained a gunshot injury to the left side of his body he remains hospitalized and is currently recovering.

Rigo Vellos, Mayor, Corozal
"The other guy is one of his best friends who was there with him also. I understand he also got shot I believe they said he was at the Orange walk hospital recovering and I am not sure but I think he needed to go through a surgery today and I'm hoping that everything goes well with him and I also want to share my condolences with Jam family you know and I'm wishing goodluck to whosoever is going into surgery."
The owner of the bar spoke with us off camera. He says that security was present on the night of the incident. But these unpredictabie events are often out of their control.
Voice of: Earl Kelly, Owner, Mi Compa
"All that I heard was just fire the gun when it burst. That's it that's all i heard and everyone stayed in that's the only thing I heard then. What I saw I saw nothing you know so it's really crazy how things played out so fast you know and I don't really know what happened."
"I try to have the business safe for everybody you know that comes by but now it's really scary for everybody to come in a back area you know. I won't say it's not safe but people jeopardize my business now you know."
"The police they do a good job and whatever but they can't do everything. The thing played out so fast that we don't know what really happened and they don't know what really happened you know so."
"My Condolences to the family that passed away at our business. It's beyond our control and we really don't know what happened but we will work with them and the officers you know to try our best to get it together and get it done."
It's been a traumatic weekend for all parties involved and the Mayor is now pleading to the public, specifically those present the night of the shooting to come forward and share what they know with the police.
Rigo Vellos, Mayor, Corozal
"These things tend to happen not only in Corozal but everywhere and a lot of times nothing happens because there are pieces missing and I believe that it is our own responsibility as a citizen or if you know a1nyone to come out and share your piece cause you know to cannot save a life because it has already happened but it can probably save another life for it not to happen you know ever again so that's all I'm asking the public that if they know anything to come out and share it with the police it's our duty as a community to work together with the police to solve these crimes."
