The family and friends of 28-year-old Jeffrey Brown believed he would have survived being shot over the weekend since he seemed to be recovering just fine.

But, today, he took a turn for the worse and suddenly passed away.

Brown was the victim of what seems like a random shooting - just a gunman firing into a yard.

Today we stopped by the scene and spoke with the residents there, who had become like family to Brown. Courtney Menzies has this story.

28-year-old Jeffrey Brown was standing right here when he was shot on Saturday night. He hung onto life for five days before he suddenly passed away this afternoon around midday.

Brown was sort of a drifter, and the yard he was standing in had become his new home. The matriarch of the home explained that they were all outside minutes before the shooting.

Marilyn Welch, Friend of Deceased
"We were sitting there and my daughter was jinxing and saying, I hope no gunman is behind that fence watching us. Like that she was saying and I told her, girl, that rum have you talking so. Not knowing God as a witness that person must have been right there watching us and listening to us and maybe he doesn't want to shoot because lots of kids are around with us. We didn't go up 15 minutes when we heard so many shots, like it didn't want to finish. I froze in the chair, the kids started to scream out and bawl. And by the time, we heard him yell because it looks like he was coming to us, so I guess that was the only man they saw to shoot. And when we came out we saw him leaning on a mattress back there. And he was saying, "I get shot" - like he was trying to talk because he's a person who can't talk. He's been here with us for like a month he came to stay here with us a little bit."

And though they didn't know him well, they were still surprised and saddened to learn that his injuries had been fatal.

Marilyn Welch, Friend of Deceased
"I heard like he only got shot in his hand and his foot, I didn't hear he got shot in his belly, so I don't know what to say. Because my kids went to look for him, they saw they saw like he got shot in his hand and his leg."

Reporter:
"But his was conscious when they went to see him?"

Marilyn Welch, Friend of Deceased
"Yes they were talking to him good. He said how he wants to come with them but it looks like he was giving trouble on the bed so they had him strapped to the bed. So it was shocking when they came to say just not that he died."

"First time I even saw him, but I won't chase him away or anything, we talked with him, he enjoyed our company. We have him looking at TV, we have him like any family, like he's family, although he just came, we have him like a family with us."
