But while the criminals may be behind bars, police had to charge one of their own. Police corporal Irbin Jones reportedly arrived at his home in San Jose Village around 2 on Saturday morning. His wife reported that he was under the influence and pulled out his firearm. She locked the door and that was when he fired a single shot out in the yard. She then ran into her children's bedroom but then her husband began banging on the door. He held the firearm to the door and threatened to shoot it. She then called the police and Jones was arrested and charged and taken to court. However, the ComPol said today that his wife retracted her statement.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"From what I got to understand is that the wife has now retracted her statement but we are not accepting that. We are saying to her that if it is that she no longer wishes to proceed to court then she has to go to the court and inform the court of that. We will proceed with the matter before the court this morning."
Courtney Menzies:
"And in terms of internal charges?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"We have to wait to see what the court is going to do because for us to be able to proceed with internal charges against him, we do need her as well so we have to wait to see what happens at court today."
Courtney Menzies:
"Is this cop known for being violent?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"No, he is not."
Courtney Menzies:
"This is the first incident?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Yes."
She went to court today to drop the charges - so the Corporal is free of criminal charges. However, his weapon will not be returned to him and the department will apply to the firearms and ammunition board to have his license revoked. The charge will still stand at the police tribunal, so she will have to go there to drop the charges as well if she chooses.
