Tonight police are looking for a hit and run driver who killed one of their own. A police officer with almost 2 decades in department lost his life in a hit and run accident early this morning, following the end of his shift. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, leaving 38 year old Arcenio Cus for dead on the Phillip Goldson Highway. But how did the accident happen? Courtney Menzies spoke to the victim's brother:

Around 1:30 this morning, 38 year old Police Constable Arcenio Cus was heading home to Belize City on his motorcycle after a shift at the Ladyville Police Station. Traveling between miles 6 and 7 on the Phillip Goldson Highway, a black vehicle allegedly veered into his lane. ACP Hilberto Romero gave us the details.

ACP Hilberto Romero, OCED:
"Investigation is that Cus was riding his motorcycle towards Belize City when a vehicle struck him, causing his fatal injuries. We are currently conducting an investigation, so far we have nobody in custody as the person fled from the scene."

Reporter:
"What kind of vehicle was it?"

ACP Hilberto Romero, OCED:
"We do not know what type of vehicle, that is all the information we have, that he was on his motorcycle when he was struck."

A couple hours later, Cus' brother got the news and informed the rest of the family. He explained that while it was shocking, fatal accidents aren't uncommon.

Martin Cus, Brother of Deceased:
"As I said, it does happen in our life and many times we don't expect things but we need to expect the unexpected things that happen in our lives."

"I could not really comment on those things because it happens sometimes and I would think that the person that hit him, he would have rendered assistance and we cannot, as I said to my family, we cannot harm those if we want to see justice."

Cus had been a police officer for almost 20 years and while he had a vehicle, he used his motorcycle to travel between his apartment on Amara Avenue and the police station.

His brother told us that aside from being a cop, he also liked sports - and spirits.

Martin Cus, Brother of Deceased:
"I can say he was loved to play football, he loved sports, and also he liked to drink liquor like many of us."

"That's what I can say, not much I can tell you. And also he likes socializing with other people and that's what I can tell you. It's not something like maybe, I haven't seen him making trouble with our immediate family, maybe outsiders, I don't know, but sometimes our behavior is different at home than when you go out, when you're outside."

Cus had no children.

Cus is originally from Silver Creek, Toledo.
