Over a year ago, in August 2024, former City Councillor Deannie Requena, was reportedly attacked after leaving the prison, where she was visiting her boyfriend. Her vehicle was crashed into around Mile 14 on the George Price Highway, and she was stabbed and robbed. The police quickly detained two men - 31 year old Burton Claire and 22 year old Kareem Allen. However, while Claire was initially charged with use of deadly means of harm, and Allen with aggravated assault and theft, today they walked out of court as free men.
The prosecutor informed the court that the defendant's attorney, Ronell Gonzales, sent a letter seeking an adjournment in the matter. The prosecutor also told the court that police have been unable to locate the virtual complainant.
After 45 minutes, all the charges were dismissed for want of prosecution.
Outside the courtroom, Reporter Anita Nembherd spoke to the men.
However, in a Facebook comment, Requena said, quote, "The Prosecution Branch has never made contact nor has notified me about any court hearing. I was NEVER notified about the matter after a year of asking when the matter will be called up. Grateful to be alive today, but my money you stole from my purse, and my vehicle you've damaged won't go so easy." End quote.
