Police are investigating a fatal road traffic accident in the north that claimed the life of a 44-year-old woman.

It happened around 9:50 yesterday morning between miles 60 and 61 on the Philip Goldson Highway. When police arrived, they found a Nissan Frontier pickup off the road with its driver, 34-year-old Sergio Jair Cantun of San Jose Nuevo Palmar, trapped behind the wheel.

Nearby, a Mahindra pickup was overturned on its side with 19-year-old Alva Magaña of Yo Creek Village pinned inside. Lying on the pavement behind that vehicle was the body of 44-year-old Olga Imelda Chi of San Luis Village. She had been flung from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the Northern Regional Hospital.

Chi was driving the Mahindra with Magaña as a passenger when she lost control and slammed into Cantun's Nissan, which was carrying his wife, 37-year-old Yahaira Mai, and two minors. They all received varying degrees of injuries.

Investigators are continuing their inquiries into the fatal collision.
