On September third, Jareem Staine was targeted on Coney Drive as he left the Magistrate's Court. His vehicle was shot up by men on motorcycle but she escaped unharmed.

And then on Friday evening, he was targeted again when the vehicle he was in was targeted with a massive hail of gunfire - but, again, he escaped unharmed.

And while he was the target, tonight, police have a "wanted"poster out for him. That's because they believe 23 year old Staine - known as "32" - is driving a lot of the gang violence on the streets right now. They say he is the leader of a faction of one of the gangs currently at war.

His family says the police are distorting the truth - and that they are the ones being made to suffer from constant police harassment.

His mother and his aunt spoke to us today off camera at their home in the Martin's area:

Voice of: Pamela Staine, Jareem's Mother
"That is no kind of way to live, sir, because you have no peace, no peace of mind, nothing. Because as you shut your door, 15 minutes or 20 minutes, you see the policeman they come in, they barge, and they look for Jareem Staine, and I get tired of that, and I can't live like that no more."

"Two truckloads, must be 10 police, I got my grandbaby in there, they come, they say they are looking for gun and ammunition, they are not looking for no gun and ammunition, sir. They came to look for my son, but they use gun and ammunition."

"I have a wake-up my grandchildren out of their bed, and that's not nice. Any shooting the policeman say that they will pick up him, that it is him who is responsible."

Jules Vasquez
"Do you believe he is responsible?"

Voice of: Pamela Staine, Jareem's Mother
"No, sir, no, sir."

Jules Vasquez
"But you know, Miss Pamela, there is a tradition in the Belize of mothers taking up for sons that are some bad pickney."

Voice of: Pamela Staine, Jareem's Mother
"Yes, but I am not taking up for my son. I'm not. I just tired of the harassment. When they shoot after him the first time at court, everybody know that that was an inside job from inside the court. Cameras are all over on Cooney Drive."

"A camera must have catch the person who is responsible for it. I want to make it clear to everybody, the news media, everybody, the police department is painting my nephews as this big notorious. Nothing about my nephew is notorious."

"My nephew is a young black youth who is trying to live his life too. At the end of the day, they bullied him. My nephew couldn't even get to an education decent because they bullied him."

"He was bullied to the stage and whatever he is right now. So if you bully me every day, one of these days, I will design something to deal with you too."

Jules Vasquez
"Now, sometimes, as I told her, we take up for our loved ones and we cannot see them in the way that the world sees them."

"Might you accept that the Jareem, that you know and love, it might not go on out there, how he go on in here, in the family yard."

Voice of: Pamela Staine, Jareem's Mother
"Yes. I accept that like what I tell you. It runs right back to what I tell you, he's not an angel and I never did said that my nephew is an angel But I'm just saying that everything happened they paint my nephew. Even when my nephew gone da America through the back and police didn't know that my nephew gone da America through the back. As something happens they run right here, never know my nephew is in America."

"Even when nephew is in jail the killing still happen. So nobody can't tell me or the department can't tell me that it's only my nephew doing thing."

Jules Vasquez
"A next gang fire 90 rounds to try and kill your son. Do you live every day with the fear that you're gonna get that call?"

Voice of: Pamela Staine, Jareem's Mother
"Yes, sir some day, terified, worried."

Jules Vasquez
"Within a few weeks, ma'am. They tried to kill your son twice out at road Would he be safer if he were in police custody? They say he's wanted now."

Voice of: Pamela Staine, Jareem's Mother
"He won't be safe nowhere, because the police are just like the bad man. So he's not safe nowhere. Nowhere he's not safe."

Jules Vasquez
"How does this end for you?"

Voice of: Pamela Staine, Jareem's Mother
"Well, I don't know, you know, sir. But I feel like a kind of way, right? I can't. I can't And just like how they put out Jareem Staine wanted, they should get, and investigate the cameras on Cooney Drive, whatever and get and put out the wanted poster for the men who went for my nephew on Cooney Drive, because they have cameras and tapes."

"Just like how they have Jareem Staine wanted, you can post up the men wanted too."

"They didn't pick up anyone for shooting, only my nephew. Now tell me why do they have my nephew wanted for when he was the target."

Pamela Staine says the last time she saw her son was last week Thursday, the day before the shooting on the northern highway.
