On Monday, the Belize Forest Department responded to the report of a dead jaguar in the Malacate area of Independence Village. The adult female jaguar weighing approximately 110 pounds was in an advanced state of decomposition and showed evidence of having been shot. Further analysis revealed that the jaguar's canines had been removed, a clear act of illegal tampering. In their release the department stressed that "The killing, possession, or trade of jaguars or their body parts can result in up to $10,000 in fines, and Offenders will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
