Last week you heard from the proponents and architect of the marijuana referendum on Caye Caulker. Well, yesterday on Sunup, we heard the other side of the argument.
Caye Caulker Chairman, Celina Jimenez Fuentes, Primary school teacher Deborah Borland and Senator Louis Wade discussed their Hope not Dope campaign, and why they are against the legalization of Marijuana on Caye Caulker. Here's teacher Borland expressed on the couch this morning on Sun Up.
Deborah Borland, Teacher, Hope Not Dope Campaign
"As you have heard there is a need there is so much that the island needs and having that extra money will definitely give them that additional fund but you also have to think about the health aspect of it and I think that is the part that was missing from all of it because from experience I can tell you that all the benefits they want us to believe is not true. And what is to keep marijuana out of the hands of young people I have an experience I have had a son and I say had because he is no longer with us, who was exposed to marijuana he didn't buy marijuana I didn't give him money to buy marijuana that is not something that is used in my household but he got access to it and so what is to stop adults who enjoy marijuana and want to get these young people hooked on it what is to stop them from now giving it to them? What will stop them from having it more in schools? We are already seeing the struggle in schools and high schools particularly where students find a way to smoke. You can say I am raising my child and my child is coming from a good home and he won't be exposed but that is not true once the access is there, peer pressure. My son was 12 years old when he started smoking. Where did he get it from?"
The referendum will be held a week from tomorrow.
