Two weeks ago, a Canadian woman was found dead at her spa in western Belize. 67 year old Marty Thorne was found with multiple stab wounds at her resort called Raw Spa near Bullet Tree Village.
Today police gave us an update on the case. ASP Stacy Smith told us that her alleged murderer was already en route to El Salvador when they picked him up.
ASP Stacy Smith, Staff Officer
"As it relates to the murder of Marty Anne Thorne that occurred on the 9th of November 2025. On 17th November 2025, police formally arrested and charged Gian Eldred Waight a 25 year old Belizean construction worker Bullet tree falls Village Cayo District for the murder of Thorne."
"Waight was deemed a person of interest very early into the investigation, however, he fled the jurisdiction and as a consequence of liaising with Interpol counterparts in Guatemala Mr Waight was detained while seeking to board a plane in Guatemala City that was en route to El Salvador. He was handed over to police and he has since been charged. Whilst we do know that Mr. Waight was familiar with Ms. Horne, no clear motive has been established into this incident."
According to Canadian news, Thorne had been living in Belize since she was a young woman, and had returned to Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. She returned to Belize around six weeks ago.
