Just two days after PC Phillip Garbutt had charges of aggravated assault and wounding dropped against him, another police officer was in court for assaulting his wife. 37-year-old Mercedes Chiac was arraigned this morning on charges of use of deadly means or harm and wounding. His wife was in court and wanted to drop the charges, however she was not allowed inside the courtroom. No plea was taken from Chiac because the prosecutor said they are awaiting the DPP's directives.
According to police reports, around 11:00 on Sunday night Chiac's wife arrived home and Chiac immediately became aggressive. He then attacked her and began choking her. Two men then intervened and that's when Chiac got a knife and allegedly stabbed his wife in the neck. He then also allegedly stabbed himself in the neck and they were both rushed to the hospital.
In court, Chiac met bail of $2,000 and is due back on June 9th.
