And Belize is wise to start training its crop of homegrown medical professionals, because we can't rely on the Cuban medical brigade forever. Even right now, owing to US pressure, their future remains in limbo.

But what would happen if Belize were suddenly forced to cancel the program and lose the services of the 37 Cuban doctors and 47 nurses?

Would rural public health care collapse? The CEO denied that:

Julio Sabido, CEO, Ministry of Health & Wellness
"Definitely there will not be a collapse that I can tell you. We have other means I don't know again context we don't have one single facility where these people are placed. You might have 2 nurses in northern region you might have 3 nurses in western region and 4 doctors in KHMH so we just have to maybe increase overtime but there will definitely not be a collapse."
