The September Celebrations season opened last night with official ceremonies in front of the Treasury Building on Albert Street. It was a full-fledged cultural gala, with more than a little tenth territorialism, where defenders of the battle made strident declaratory defenses of their sacred historical event. Tie that in with some queens doing their curtsies and it makes for a most celebratory highlight package.

Lincoln Gillett,
"I feel as passionately for this country as my ancestors did when they were making the case to stand up and defend this land we have come to love so dearly. It is indeed both frivolous and vexatious to hear some citizens refer to the event of the 10th of September 1798 as a turkey fight. I am thinking that whether it was a turkey fight or not, we have a country. We have a place to call home and I am mighty proud of that tonight. They said collectively, 'this is where we will stay, ain't nobody gonna make us move from here.'"
And tonight, all those marching girls are getting ready for the big pageant which starts shortly at the City Center. Other September events on the weekend are the Carnival Jouvet, the International Food Festival, the Carnival King and Queen Contest, and the Voice of the Bay.
