He calls his hybrid of music "Christian Garifuna reggae" and Ivan Martinez says it will change the sound of Garifuna music as you know it. The CD is entitled "The good thing from La Buga." As the name suggests, it was recorded in La Buga, Guatemala but Martinez hopes his mix of dancehall, reggae, and reggaeton will win the ears and dancing feet of listeners from La Buga all the way to Belize City. He told us why the nine songs are worth a listen.
Ivan Martinez,
"I took out this CD to let all the Garifuna people hear that it is not only Punta Music that Garifuna people can do. They have reggae Garifuna too. This is reggae, this is reggaeton, and even hip-hop in Garifuna so everything on the CD is in Garifuna. Everything is nice on this CD right here. Everything on here is like Christian because this is a Christian Garifuna album. So I took it out not just for Christian people but for everyone who wants to enjoy it."
And in case you didn't know, La Buga is a boat trip away from Punta Gorda and it's another name for Livingston, Guatemala. The CD is now available in select record stores.
