Chico Ramos has been in the Punta music industry for 30 years, and this weekend he'll be recognized for his contribution. On Friday he'll be recognized with a lifetime achievement award and will also be crowned as the godfather of Punta. So how does the man who penned and popularized "Conch Soup" feel about three decades of Punta? He told us.
Chico Ramos,
"This weekend I will be getting the lifetime achievement award and I will be getting crowned as the godfather of Punta Rock. That is the 23rd, Friday. Saturday is my birthday bash up at the Club Rivera and on Sunday, I will be taking thirty years in the music industry so I am going to sing thirty songs out at the education center in Dangriga; one song for each year I am in the business.
It feels very nice to be this long in the music industry and to stick in it. Now you know that I am a true musician. I stayed in it one hundred percent for thirty years. I feel happy about my achievements in this whole music industry. This is payback time.
Godfather is something important, Godfather is important. I am going to leave it like that but it is good to be the Godfather. If someone calls you the Godfather, it lets you feel good and they want to be like you or...if your father passes away and you have a Godfather, you can look at your Godfather for guidance. I am the Godfather of Punta."
The festivities begin on Friday in Dangriga and will run for three days, with participation form a full slate of artists paying tribute to the Godfather.
