The Scouts Association worldwide is marking its centenary and locally the Belize Scouts Association has taken a bold step into the next century. Today the association opened its first computer lab. The 12 computers were donated by the INTERVOL organization in New York and have been refurbished for use and tricked out with an internet connection. National Scout Executive Hilberto Riverol told us how they'll be used.
Hilberto Riverol, National Scout Executive
"Well Scouting is an educational movement and we feel that we need to move in time with technology and we feel that this is one way of keeping the attention of our kids, keeping them away from the streets and keeping them busy doing something constructive. We are planning to conduct classes to train the kids how to use the computers and how to use the internet as well. We have somebody that is monitoring the computer lab here for us. We call him our webmaster as well. So he will be here fulltime coordinating and monitoring the use of the computers."
Internet access is being provided free of cost by BTL. National Scout week ends tomorrow. There are about three thousand scouts in Belize.
