The Universal takeover is health reform, the hard and costly way, but yesterday, the Ministry of Health showed the other side of that coin.

The Ministry broke ground in Cayo for the construction of a new health facility. Sure they've already got two facilities in the Cayo District - one in San Ignacio and the other in Belmopan, and both need a lot of work - so what's a third one gonna do? This is a community hospital, which will be housed on the Bullet Tree Road. Its designed as a main hospital with a regional health management team offices as well housing outpatient and accident and emergency departments, adding up to 24,279 square feet. CEO in the Ministry of Health Margaret Ventura and the regional manager for the Western Health Region, Pearl Ellis explained more.

Margaret Ventura, CEO - Ministry of Health
"The Western Regional Hospital will be the main referral hospital but that this facility will now have observation beds, a full maternity wing, and will be offering specialist services."

Pearl Ellis, - Manager - Western Health Region
"The business will also house the offices for our community based programs and these are the persons who work in partnership, closely, with our government organizations."

The project will cost $4,457,00 and is funded through the Inter American Development Bank.
