Last week we told you about Jump Street Posse's Miss Big and Beautiful Contest. After that you probably thought you had seen it all, well you haven't. On Saturday night the Mother Nature's Creation Carnival Band will select the first 'Mr. & Mrs. Bruk Yu Back.' Organizers Leroy Green and Carla Flowers say the first thing you should know is that it is not a beauty pageant but it is wildly entertaining.
Carla Flowers, Organizer
"We are trying to bring back a pageant that comes in with old time dressing and the contestants already know that they are supposed to find old things from the 60s, 70s, back then. So we are asking everybody to come out and support. Remember I tell you it is not a beauty pageant, it is a laughing contest. Everybody should come out and laugh and have fun the way how some of these people are going to be dressed."
Leroy Green, Organizer
"Instead of it being just a female contest, it is a male and female contest and again they will be doing introduction in whatever getup they decide to do; they will be doing talent; and they will be doing chit chat in what they choose to be their evening wear. It is an effort from Mother Nature's Creation to raise some funds, much needed funds I must say, for their costumes because we are not a band with a lot of sponsors. These people raise their own money so that carnival day they can get out there and excite the crowd and I can let you in on a secret that this year, they will shock Belize with their costumes."
There will be 10 contestants, 5 males and 5 females. This afternoon we got a preview of Saturday'a show from two of the male contestants - John McCullough and Eddie Sanford.
John McCullough, Contestant
"I have been a big fan of punta from a long time ago and I love punta. Of course I am a member of the Mother Nature group and they asked me if I wanted to participate in a bruk yuh back contest. Well I have no reason why I think I shouldn't enjoy myself on the stage breaking my back or trying to get my back broken in the process. It's all good and its for a good cause so we want to ask the people to come out and support us because we know they are going to enjoy themselves. They might laugh until their belly bottom hot them."
Eddie Sanford, Contestant
"This is my carnival band and I love carnival. So you must come and especially see me because I will give you a show. Just because of my size you can't think I don't know how to dance, I know how to dance. I know how to bruk my back so especially the ladies, if you want to see me I will be right there at Mr. & Mrs. Bruk Yuh Back, I will win."
The Mr. and Miss Bruk Yuh Back will be chosen Saturday night beginning at 7 at the YWCA on St. Thomas Street. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children.
