Tonight we note the passing of Sir George Brown, former Chief Justice of Belize. The 65-year-old Brown died this morning at his home in Belize City. A relative told us that he died in his sleep. For years he had suffered with epilepsy and they believe that it is a seizure that took him as he slept.
Brown served as Chief Justice from 1991 to 1998. And while his contributions on the bench are noted, his legacy as a sportsman and community activist was also significant. In his youth, he was a formidable footballer and latterly, organized a number of teams for youths under the name, Brown's Bombers. He was also a devoted seaman, and was known to participate annually in the Baron Bliss harbor regatta.
No final date has been set for his funeral.
