An event that was originally planned as a tribute to slain reggae icon Lucky Dube has taken on a social life of its own after Smokey Joe died, followed by a week of unprecedented violence in the city. And so Sunday’s tribute at the MCC tennis court will be for Lucky Dube, Smokey Joe, and the victims of gun violence. Ras Buck and Dara Robinson – the man who made a name for himself with a life sized doll of Bob Marley. Well he has a life style doll of Lucky Dube also and he met him and Ras Buck downtown this morning promoting Sunday night’s tribute.

“Me and Dara decide to do this show because a lot of the youths are going down to gun violence and thing and nobody noh di pay attention to that. It is like we are the low people in society and thing and nobody noh business with we. So by doing this show wah help show the people that somebody still cares for poor people. Why we choose Lucky Dube too is that Lucky Dube is one of our idols and he is like second to Bob and Lucky Dube fell to gun violence too. With that we decide Lucky Dube violence and the violence that is going on in the streets right now is a perfect issue and topic to address the youths and let them know it is time for us to put a stop to this violence because if we don’t put a stop to the violence, directly none of wi noh wah deh.”
Dara Robinson, Organizer
“Lucky Dube was killed by gun violence and I sit down in my theatre and I came up with a vision and I said there are a lot of youths and brethrens that I know that died by violence. Before the killings even started I planned this show, before it continued, and I said to myself I will put the two together. Right after the football game the show will start. At eight o’clock sharp the highlight of the show, I will show a DVD with Lucky Dube, a live DVD. Then along with the show I am paying tribute to this gun violence, or any violence at all that takes life.”
Sunday’s show starts at 6 pm at the MCC tennis court. The entrance fee is $5.
