Last night we told you about the paving of Albert and Regent Streets – which, should be finished in time for the September Celebration. After months in the wilderness, the Ministry of Works has swooped in, taken the project over from the city council, and commenced works. The paving is the center piece but a major component of the downtown upgrade is the installation of sidewalks along Regent and Albert Streets. Presently a good stretch of those streets have no sidewalk and the areas that do, form an uneven hodgepodge, making a walk through the streets sort of like hopscotch. But now, they will have a uniform

sidewalk down the length of both streets. The contractor is Maheia United Concrete and Director Carla Hart told us what’s involved.

Carla Hart, Maheia United
“On the Regent Street side of the project we are going to be installing sidewalks on both sides of the street and on the Albert Street we are going to be doing some demolition and extending the sidewalks and applying stamp concrete.”

Jules Vasquez,
When it is finished, what should pedestrians in the city expect?

Carla Hart,
“Well a beautiful sidewalk. Levelled sidewalks, sidewalks on both sides of the street, so it is going to be safer for pedestrians obviously and aesthetics so it is going to be beautiful. It is going to be all one pattern. So it is going to be uniformed, so a better walking experience I suppose.”

The survey work for the sidewalk ahs commenced and should take two months. According to Works Minister Boots Martinez, the entire scope of works on both streets is estimated to cost $3.34 million.
