Gary Owens, he’s a comedian who you may have seen on BET’s Comic View or in the movie ‘Little Man.’ And tonight Owens is in Belize. He’s here to perform at the Bliss Center as part of the three month homage to former director Beverly Smith Lopez. Now Miss Bev’s forte was comedy and we asked Owens how he hopes to live up that. The midwesterner just sounded very happy to be here and so did his promoter Rudy Cruz.
Gary Owen, Performing Saturday at Bliss
“Laughter is hot. I think the auditorium’s air-conditioned so come cool off, it is going to be crazy, I don’t know what’s going to come out of my mouth. I’ve never been here before, I’m nervous.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
Gary you know all of this is taking place in memory of a favourite comedian, our very own Beverly Smith Lopez. How do you feel that you’ve been invited to take part and to participate in her honor?
Gary Owen,
“I am honoured and humbled and it is just crazy to me how I can grow up in the Midwest in the United States and through BET and the movies that I have been in that people in a whole other part of the world know who I am and thinks enough of me that they want to have me come to honor one of your own. That’s crazy to me. I can’t believe it.
I’ll ask the audience what they want me to talk about because I don’t know what you guys do. I am going to find out tonight so probably half my act’s going to be written by eight o’clock tomorrow. So I don’t know what I’m going to talk about. We’ll see what happens tonight, hopefully I make it. I can’t wait. I’m glad the storm left so I knew it was on my side because the storm was coming through but it left so I made it. I’m just happy to be here, I can’t believe it.”
Rudy Cruz, Promoter
“Gates are going to be open at 7 pm so we’re going to have two Belizeans as well, we’re featuring Kenny Morgan and Dylan Jones from Orange Walk.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
I know tickets have been at $50, how has that been?
Rudy Cruz,
“It has been pretty slow due to the storm and everything. We’ve had a lot of reservations but today was a busy day so hopefully by tomorrow we could fill that place.”
The show starts tomorrow at 7.
