And while the community and the cops hope to get a long holiday from crime in June and for the rest of the year, the new roster of public and bank holiday was issued today - the third iteration of it. And if you were wondering what's the change, well, "Freedom Day" has been changed to "Emancipation Day."
The holiday itself commemorates the end of slavery in the Caribbean and the Americas and it celebrated throughout the region. As a progressive move, the PUP government added it to our existing list of holidays at the beginning of their term.
But they added it as Freedom Day, and Yaya Marin Coleman championed the change in name to what it really represented – the emancipation of slaves. So, the correction was made and the list was re-issued for the third time. The day falls on Sunday, August 1st but the holiday will be celebrated on the Monday, August 2nd
