In other news connected to local indigenous groups, the Belize National Indigenous Council (BENIC) is reporting that they met 2 weeks ago as part of the organization's commemoration of the "International Week for Indigenous Peoples".
The members of BENIC, namely: National Garifuna Council, the Maya Leaders Alliance, Toledo Alcaldes Association, and the Northern Maya Association of Belize reiterated the need to meaningfully include Belize's Indigenous Peoples in finding solutions to the multiple pressing national and international issues. Benic is also agitating for a new social contract that includes their aspirations to live and live well as Indigenous peoples of Belize.
A press release from the organization says that BENIC was established in 1989.
