Tonight we note the passing of a colleague: journalist, poet and folk writer, Roy Davis.
Davis, who had just turned 72, died yesterday of natural causes.
Davis started writing newspaper stories in the late 1970's, and over many years, he wrote for the Amandala newspaper, and worked as a court reporter for this media house and others.
We knew him as a gifted writer of easy elegance and absolute economy of words.
But, he also had a flair for the poetic, and a little bit of Bra'Anansi in him - as he displayed at this book launch in 2004:
Roy Davis, Deceased
"[Excerpt from NO EASE]
The dying, the dead, the slaughter
The tears of sorrow that come after
Who can stand the pain?
Who should get the blame?"
Roy Davis, Deceased
"I can identify with "I can identify with Anansi and maybe that is because I would consider myself an underdog.""
That was the launch of his book Anansi Party in 2004. Roy Davis, dead at 72.
