Escuela Mexico in San Roman Village in the Corozal district is tonight without a principal.
Elbert Worrel the school's principal and two other teachers last week received letters that put them on interdiction. Today the principal visited our offices to make it clear that while he's out of a job he has absolutely no idea why disciplinary measures have been taken against him.
Elbert Worrel, Principal Escuela Mexico
"Up to now, I am questioning what were the charges. I have never been told what were the charges or the basis for my suspension. Subsequently to be placed on interdiction, everything started with an anonymous letter submitted to the board, it was a series of allegations which I have no knowledge of and was never confronted with by the board or even given an audience with the board to clarify. So technically I have no reason for the suspension."
"I am out on suspension plus two more teachers, and as I said with decisions like these the ones who are affected the most are the students. I once informed this morning that officials from the ministry of education are on the compound because students are demanding an explanation as to why this is happening. I also understand police were there and I think that's unnecessary."
Worrell says he's seeking an audience with the school's board and is taking the matter to the teachers union.
