The legal community today gathered to honor the memory of President of the Appeals Court Ira Rowe.

On the 25th of January the judge was found dead in his hotel room in the Turks and Caicos Island, he was 75 years old.

Today at the supreme court, a memorial service was held in his honor and Attorney General Eamon Courtney told the gathering - including Rowe's relatives - that Belize and the Caribbean has lost a leading light in the judiciary.

Hon. Eamon Courtenay, Attorney General
"His was a life of service. He died as he lived. Mr. Justice Rowe served Belize as the president of the court of appeals. He presided over the court with humility and serenity. He was a firm judge but a compassionate judge. He managed the business of the court efficiently. He ensured those who came before him, whether defended or not, received a fair hearing. Patience, understand, even-temperedness, all the hallmarks of a judge were possessed by Mr. Rowe."

Courtenay took the opportunity to announce that there will be two appointments to the appeals court. Queens counsel Elliot Ottley will be appointed to become the president of the appeals court and Dennis Morrison will be appointed to sit as a judge of the appeals court. These designates will need the approval of the senate.
