He carries the name of a Guatemalan provincial leader who made a mad incursion into Western Belize in the 1960's, but Marco Antonio Sagastume is no invader, he is a guest. In fact, he is one of the region's foremost human rights activists and the director of the human rights studies program at San Carlos University in Guatemala. He today visited our studios and explained that he is in the country to help the University of Belize in improving its human rights studies courses.

Marco Antonio Sagastume,
[Translation] "The purpose is to collaborate with the center of studies on human rights in the University of Belize so that these topics that are products of studies on humanity in the protection of human dignity can be taught in Belize."

"You are the Central American country that is most behind in the studies of human rights in education."

"It is the most valuable heritage and in Belize it has not been given it to you and it belongs to you. I come to the Belizean people with love and humility to tell Belizeans that you need to learn about your rights. But be mindful that governments of all countries are not interested in this topic because they are better off if people do not know their rights because they won't demand them."

Sagastume will be addressing students at the University of Belize at the Belmopan campus tomorrow afternoon.
