Vice Chancellor for the University of the West Indies Nigel Harris is in Belize holding country consultations with various stakeholders in education. Harris today told us that the university is looking at ways in which it can enable local institutions and students to tap into existing courses of study and finding a way to make Belizean universities and junior colleges compatible with UWI.

Nigel Harris, Vice-Chancellor - UWI
"What we are doing is gathering stakeholders, the government, business community, the University of Belize and other tertiary education institutions to discuss what are the human resource needs of Belize and how can we partner the University of Belize, other tertiary level institutions, with the University of the West Indies to meet the human resource needs of Belize. We of course also want to talk and we have brought other individuals to talk of some of the larger development needs where some of our academics can provide help in agriculture, in engineering, in national resources management. There are other areas in which the UWI has technical capacity and what want this to do is to explore some of that."

The consultations continue tomorrow at the Radisson.
