They sent $20 million away in U.S. currency to the foreign accounts of Glenn Godfrey companies in New Orleans and Miami, so it wasn't hard for Social Security to front $20,000 for the education of a few young Belizeans. It today awarded scholarships to thirty-eight students. 15 of the scholarships are for high school, 17 for sixth form, and 6 at the bachelor degree level. It is the first year that scholarships have been awarded at the bachelor degree level and it will cost SSB $20,000. The students picked up their checks this morning. Acting Chairman of the Board Meliton Auil spoke at a ceremony held at the George Price Center in Belmopan.
Meliton Auil, Acting SSB Chairman
"Social Security is committed in helping to improve the lives of Belizeans and by reaching out and awarding these scholarships, this is just one small aspect of what we want to do to help the country. We congratulate the parents on the success of your children and we would like to see, especially those in fourth form, make it all the way through to get a degree and contribute to Belize on a whole."
