University of Belize students will not have to pay an increase in registration fees. That was the decision announced today by UB's Board of Trustees and the Government of Belize. A press release from UB says "the government of Belize has agreed to pay the increase in fees as approved by the board of trustees and implemented by the University of Belize effective August 2006. Therefore students will not be required to pay the cost of the increase."

As we have been reporting, UB planned to more than double registration fees with a campus development fee of $100, computer fee of $165 and other costs, which took the average registration fee from $170 to $410.

The students led by student activist Moses Sulph threatened to protest on Saturday and to the boycott registration, which is scheduled to begin on Monday. But that won't happen now because the students won't be paying more. Sulph today told us he will wait and see if the government will live up to the their end of the bargain.

The release from UB notes that government will not pay the increased cost of late fees which zoomed from $10 to $200.
