With the speed of mercury falling on a hot day as afternoon slides into evening, the Teachers Union has finally pronounced on the implementation of the free textbooks programme. A statement issued today criticizes what the union calls late and insufficient delivery of books, poor and inadequate information, and general displeasure about the quality and level of the textbooks in some subject areas. These and other problems says the union have all added up to, “nightmares, confusion and added challenges and responsibilities for principals and schools.”
And according to the Union the bottom line is that “there are many schools both urban and rural that still have not received all their books.” It concludes, “the Ministry has failed to live up to its promise to provide textbooks to all our primary school students." Finally it calls on the Ministry to issue a true and accurate update on the textbooks programme.
