Today we caught Education Minister Francis Fonseca on the campaign trail. He chided Moses Sulph, accused him of being manipulated, and did his best to show us that he wasn't bothered by the protest.
Hon. Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education
"There are almost three thousand students at UB and I understand there were about 50 students who were protesting led by Moses Sulph. I am always a passionate defender of students' rights and I won't change that. So I am all for students voicing their opinions, voicing their criticisms if they are not satisfied with certain things. So I defend that right. I will say that Moses who I've worked very well with over the last few years does lose some credibility in my eyes when he tries to organize some students a week before elections when we knows that our record on education is unparalleled.
We're working with them to develop the Belize City campus. He visited me in my office about two months ago about that issue and we did agree that we would do what we could to expand the UB campus in Belize City but I did say to him that it would have to be in the new fiscal year. That was my commitment. I understand the Chairman and the Board have already started some of the work and I'm glad that they have done that. But nobody can question our commitment to UB and I am disappointed that Moses would fall into this political arena, one week before election and allow himself to be exploited by the UDP."
