There are summer camps popping up all over the place, but the Audubon Society is claiming bragging rights because its camps take kids to places many they’ve never seen – and we’re not talking the Serengeti plains here, we mean places right here in Belize. Camp destinations include the Cockscomb Basin, the Blue Hole National Park, the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary and the Half Moon Caye Natural Monument. Coordinator Dirk Francisco told us why it is such a rare opportunity.

Dirk Francisco, Coordinator
“We have a lot of visitors that go to these protected areas every year and it is a shame that our Belizeans don’t get the opportunity to go there so through the Belize Audubon’s Summer camps they will have the opportunity. It is an opportunity for Belizeans to get outside and see Belize at its best because I do have friends too who see some of my photographs and they are like, hey that’s not Belize and I keep telling them it is Belize so Belize Audubon’s summer camp is to take Belize City, Corozal, Orange Walk, P.G., Dangriga, outside of their towns – set outdoors.

All of our camps have a small cost to them. They are heavily subsidized by the Belize Audubon Society and also we encourage businesses in Belize to sponsor children who might not be able to support the camps to come to the camps that we have.”

Those wanting to attend can call the Belize Audubon Society at 223-5004.
