They may not be the exciting government department, like the police that makes the evening news regularly. But, the Belize Bureau of Standards works in the background to protect Belizean consumers from predatory business practices such as price gouging, and they also work for promote efficiency and competitive production in goods and services in the country.
The Bureau is now focusing on metrology and the calibration of instruments of measurement for use within the health and agro-productive sectors. They are working with specialists from the National Metrology Institute in Mexico. The Bureau and their Mexican counterparts have had an agreement for cooperation that is now over 2 decades old, and so, they're tapping into that resource to better train and equip staffers.
They held a half-day workshop this morning with the Mexicans, and they invited the media to stop by and discuss this new venture:
The Director estimates that the training and capacity building for his staff should take place over the next 3 years. During that time, Belizeans will be sent to Mexico for a sort of exchange program between the Bureau of Standards and the National Metrology Institute.
