April 12th will see the phased re-opening of Belize's schools. Reportedly as many as 70 schools countrywide have expressed an interest in opening on that date - subject to ministry approval to make sure that are COVID-safe.
Some are all for it, proclaiming to anyone that will listen that kids have to get back into the classroom, as soon as possible. Others aren't so sure, and many are crying out at the financial strain likely to be caused by even a phased re-opening.
Last week Friday, shortly after the announcement had been made, we took the streets to ask 6 parents whether they and their child were ready. Here's what they said:
A UNICEF study shows that the closure of school has meant a lack of access to food programs and peer-to peer-support.
And research shows that for many kids it took away a refuge from domestic violence.
