Last year, we introduced you to the Solar Engineers from the South - three Maya women who studied in India to learn how to bring solar powered electricity to needy villages. After lighting up their own, they travelled to Machakilha and Graham Creek to give each home electricity. And today, their company, Belize Power Connect Limited made their first donation of solar panels to the ITVET in Belize. The instructors at the school are currently training to be able to teach the students about solar powered electricity and how to install and maintain the system.
Miriam Choc, the engineer, travelled all the way from Toledo to make the donation. And ITVET's manager spoke about the importance of educating young men and women about this type of electricity.
Miriam Choc, Solar Engineer

"We are donating a 50watt system which is a home system for light and to charge phones. We are donating to this institution, because they are going to start to train the students about solar, and we are very happy to hear about it and it's a good thing for Belize, renewable energy and that's why we are donating this to them. I am very happy to hear if they learn. because I think a few in Belize knows about solar, especially the women, I encourage them to learn. That is the best thing to go now."
Denroy Tillett, Manager, ITVET Belize City

"One thing Belize is rich in is a lot of sunlight and of course we get a lot of wind and in using different type of renewable energy sources with that in mind and then I think as of late BEL start doing surveys asking if people are interested in solar panels as a renewable energy interested in putting it on their homes, feeding it into the grid and stuff like that and that's what spark the proposal where we see where Belize City being the commercial city for the country and of course having the largest population and then we have ITVET here, that we can attract a lot of young people into this new program, we learn about solar energy, renewable energy, installation and servicing and that would coincide with what BEL is doing so that when that is rolled out, we would have already have a cadre of young people trained in learning about renewable energy and be able to instal these same solar panels."
