SATIIM is reporting tonight that the second group of Maya Women from Toledo were certified in GPS mapping.
These 15 Q'eqchi' Maya women received certificates of participation after completing 5 days of training in the use of the hand-held GPS and compass. The training was coordinated by SATIIM with funding from the European Union in a project to protect and promote the economic social and cultural rights of Maya women in Belize.
The first Maya women's mapping team from Conejo Village co-facilitated the training along with SATIIM's in-house GPS trainer, Martin Cus.
The Maya buffer villages of the Sarstoon Temash National Park are preparing maps as part of the process to implement the 2015 Consent Order from the Caribbean Court of Justice on Maya Communal Lands. The Maya Women's GPS teams represent the first effort to include Maya women as trained technicians and data collectors.
