And looking more closely at school vendors is only one of the steps that the Ministry will take moving forward. Today, Fonseca told us the other plans they will implement.
Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education
"In terms of the way forward for us at the Ministry of Education, this incident allows me to make two fundamental point. One we have created within the ministry last year and a half a student welfare unit within the Ministry of Education because we appreciate that there are many challenges that students face on a daily basis and that whole student welfare unit, the whole idea of that unit is for us to engage more meaningfully with the community, with parents, with families, you know all the stakeholders in education, but primarily at the community level, to engage with our students and their families to find ways in which we can support them. So that students welfare unit is critically important when we talk about this type of incident, how can we support our students. And then the program, the national healthy tart feeding program that we launched 2 years ago, again, critically important, we talk about this all the time, very often our students are not eating properly at school, apparently some of these students were eating gummies lunch time. And children are children, they will eat sweets and treats and so, but it's critically important for us to develop and expand this national healthy start feeding program across the country."
The minister also explained that they will be working with schools to ensure that they all have an effective safety plan in place for incidents such as this one.
