Today saw the end of the Rogers Stadium summer camp for kids. 48 primary school students spent the last two weeks getting extra help while they're out of school. It culminated with one final activity, a trip to the zoo.

And afterwards, the kids were all given their certificates and some school supplies. The educational director from the Belize diaspora told us more.

Mike Gentle, Educational Director, Belize Diaspora

"This summer camp is part of an extension of the RSPCSC program where we try to get some of these kids off the street where we educate them and get them into some organized sports."

"This is the third year, we're basically doing some basic English, Phonics, Math, kind of an enrichment program and next year we're going to introduce engineering so we're going to put in a STEM piece next year with engineering."

"We try to hold on to as much of the kids as we can because we want to see them through high school and just follow them and see their progress throughout their public school career."

Courtney Menzies:
"How have you seen the kids improve since the start of the camp to now?"

Mike Gentle, Educational Director, Belize Diaspora
"There have been some improvement. The improvement that I would like to see can't happen because it's only two weeks and some of them are real deficient in the basics in reading and math but there have been some minor progress. One of our goals is to keep in touch with the schools so that we can monitor their progress throughout the school year so that's the next thing on our agenda."
