Yesterday the Garifuna Language Commission, established by the National Garifuna Council and the Battle of the Drums Secretariat got approval from the Ministry Of Education for their Garifuna Language Curriculum which took them up to three years to develop. The curriculum was developed with a sole purpose to keep the Garifuna language alive in schools in the south, with a desire to eventually expand the curriculum to other schools across the country. Today we spoke via Zoom with one of the representatives:

The curriculum is accompanied by a professional development plan which will be used to assist teachers and educators to deliver the content efficiently. Avila tells us more about which schools will be the first to try out the curriculum, hopefully within the upcoming school year.

Avila notes that the curriculum was made to teach students from up to preschool to Standard six. He says further modifications and adjustments will be made to ensure inclusivity of special needs children.
