A group of youths are seeking to make a change in their community by encouraging literacy through their program, "Tek Time Fi Read."

We spoke to two of the organizers today, Kayleigh Witty and Joevahn Waight, who told us more.

Kayleigh Witty, Orangnizer, Tek Time Fi Read

"The Tek Time Fi Read program started in 2018 and it was started by the Belmopan youth spiritual empowerment program so it's a youth group, Its Bahi inspire youth group its interfaith for youth 11 years and older just that they can become agents of change and it encourages community service we have study sports activities for them to do and we came with the TEK TIme Fi Read project as a way to distribute books to get books of all genres to children because we know that they only have access sometimes to school books. So we wanted it to be an easy way, a free way and in an environment that's positive and encourages a love for reading."

"When younger people see younger people reading then that will encourage the culture of reading. So we wanted that image and also it's an idea made from the youth group so we take the initiative and we want to see change in our community and we want to be that change."

Joevahn Waight, Orangnizer, Tek Time Fi Read

"The book festival whenever the TEK TIme FI REad project has over 3,000 books or 3,500 is the number we aim for when we host one. We often host the book festival and it's there to basically give out free books to kids from 5-18. Yes kids younger can come for books as well so that is the main goal of the book festival."

"We have certain games they play to earn book points and with those book points they purchase the book of their liking. Which they can browse around the book section for."

"There is also a comic corner where fans can probably stay and we have a few people that are there and are well versed in comics so they can talk about that with them."

The Tek Time Fi Read Book festival is scheduled for July 20th from 9am -4pm at the Belmopan Civic Center.
