Earlier on in the newscast, we told you how effective firefighting at last night's blaze on Regent Street West made sure that what could have been a block burner was confined to one building. Well it's that same firefighters' resolve that's now almost completely extinguished the fire at the garbage dump. Deputy Chief Ted Smith told us it's under control, and it will soon be a bother to no one.

Ted Smith, Deputy Fire Chief
"The status of the dump at this moment is that that fire is almost completely extinguished at this time. Given a day or two you should see no more smoke in the area or very little if any. If you go out there now, you can see that about 85 to 90% of that dump has been extinguished. The Fire Department worked with the other agencies, such as those agencies that brought in those mechanized equipment, those excavators through the Ministry of Works and through the City Council. Yes the Fire Department worked well with them in extinguishing that fire, we also worked well with the BDF who assisted in providing us with some manpower on the ground, and other agencies that out there, police, we worked well with them in getting this fire under control and extinguished. The Fire Department is still working on a plan and we should be meeting next week Monday and we will try an arrange a meeting as soon as possible with the other partners to present that plan to them in ensuring that we have things in place that should a fire develop, it does not develop to what it did over the past couple of weeks."

The dump is scheduled to be moved from its existing location to an area at mile 22 on the Western Highway. The existing compound will be used as a transfer point.
