Meteorologists, environmentalists, geologists, and even some economists spent today at a national consultation workshop on climate change at the Biltmore Hotel. They spent the day preparing what's called a national communication on climate change which is due this year. It's part of our obligation under the united nations framework convention on climate change and to prepare the document Belize has hired consultant Earl Green. If you are thinking that all this high-flown talk about climate change won't affect you, forecaster Ann Gordon says it will.
Ann Gordon, Meteorologist
"One of the things the Belizean public needs to be aware of is the impact that climate change can have. Belize is a low lying state and one of the impacts of climate change will be sea level rise. Because of the temperature warming that will be taking place along with climate change we could also see intensity in storms and we are seeing some very strong storms and hurricanes forming. So Belize is vulnerable to climate change effects and I think people should be concerned about the environment we are living in. We need right now to save this environment for the present generation and also future generations and the whole thing is for people to be aware that climate change is here with us."
The United Nations Development Program has provided US$15,000 to prepare the project proposal. A draft will be ready by September and if accepted, implementation will begin next year.
