That's not all the Belize City Council is doing. The Mayor also spoke about the project to reduce climate vulnerability, with assistance from the IDB- in a project that was started by the last council. In layman's terms, they are helping flood prone areas with improved drainage. The first component of the project is already underway, with Orange Street being renovated with a pumping station and the installation of a floodgate in canals to control water flow. Mayor Wagner spoke about his vision for that area.
Bernard Wagner - Mayor, Belize City "That is with the climate vulnerability reduction program where it encompasses alleviating flooding, flooding risks, along the Orange Street. If you notice they finished the Orange Street, they are now doing the canal side. We dredged the canal for them, they are now lining the canal but that area there we feel will be a real economic boost as an opportunity zone for the Southside for that area where we will be entertaining young entrepreneurs who would want to maybe put a small shop over the canal to serve the community. It would be a great opportunity and we are right behind that, if you notice we had done our entrepreneur program, that is going pretty well with 25 young people owning their own business and that infrastructure going there will serve as marketing for that type of activity."
The loan from IDB is US$10 million dollars. The second component of the project is controlling coastal erosion in Palapa Gardens Beach on Caye Caulker.
