Only eighteen days into the New Year and four manatees have already been found dead in the Belize District. It's alarming, because these endangered animals are protected to keep them from going completely extinct. The fourth manatee was found today, in the Seashore Promenade area. According to Jamal Galvez from Clearwater Marine Aquarium, they are hoping that legislation will eventually be enacted to protect the creatures.

This manatee, a female who may have recently bore a calf, had no visible wounds and will need an postmortem exam.
