Yesterday, three men were caught near the Belize Old River in Phase 4 with a chainsaw and machetes. Police also observed several recently cut trees in the area along with the lumber and wood shavings. That was enough for the officers to arrest the men for illegal logging. The men were detained pending the investigation.
Today, police officers went back to the area along with Forestry Officers and saw that the black mangroves were being illegally converted into lumber. After making their assessments, all three suspects were released and are required to report to the Forestry Officers in Belmopan on Monday to receive official charges.
