Work on the Coastal Highway is proceeding apace - and while the project has excited industrial and tourism interest for cutting down the time it takes to get south - conservationists are not that happy.
That; That's because the road cuts through a nature corridor.
On August 19 representatives from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing and the Maya Forest CorridorCoalition visited specific sites along the Coastal Road currently under construction. The purpose of the visit was to assess and discuss the design of two culverts that traverse the MFC and will be utilized as wildlife underpasses.
Conservation Scientist Elma Kay told us what they agreed to:
A release from the Ministry of Infrastructure says "the collaborative effort…recognizes the ministry's commitment to balance development with biodiversity conservation and the proper management of Belize's natural capital, and the MFC Coalition's dedication to saving a critical area for wildlife."
